POPE wants
to give a hope and a future to the dalit youth
to make them understand and leverage
their rights as well as enable them to shoulder willingly and efficiently their responsibilities
India is a developed Country among the developing countries and a developing country among the developed countries. The globalization, liberalization and privatization has brought any articles from any Countries to the Indian market. On the other side of the coin, the poor becomes poorer. Around 35% of Indian population exists in poverty, unable to meet the basic needs. Poverty, illiteracy and ill health trapped a poor person. The caste induced poverty, illiteracy and ill health are the major contributing factors for the oppressed and suppressed conditions of Dalits in India.
To help the youth to recover the rights to life, the rights to land and housing, the rights to drinking water and sanitation, the rights against exploitation, the right to get share in development, the right to food, the rights to get a good education and the rights to access to reach the higher education, POPE found out few ways to respond to theses discriminations.
POPE has established the following youth development programme.
In addition of the Dalit Children Development Centre (DCDC), POPE could construct the POPE community college on the campus of Thallakulam:
Each year, this college welcomes 70 students shared in 5 different vocational trainings: computer, carpentry, electrical / plumbing, tailoring, health assistant trainings for free cost. Community College system was followed, linking with industrialists, banks, credit institutions for creating employability.
The training services include various skill training for youth (6 months to 12 months) entrepreneurial development training, gender development and sensitivity training, leadership training of various groups in the Dalit community, awareness and empowerment training, life skill education etc.
Dalit children are not aware of various educational, training, scholarship and vocational trade details. Since they lack in vocational guidance/career guidance, they easily become unsuccessful in their career and join with the petty coolie work. Vocational guidance is to choose an occupation, prepare for it, enter upon and progress in it. In order to provide various information related to their career, POPE organizes 2 days career guidance camp.
The objectives are:
Dalit youth is given awareness at different levels through folk media, mass media, PEER education, self help groups approach, networking dalit youth and providing various education inputs in the life cycle of Dalits.
